Dao De Jing

Dao De Jing

A Philosophical Translation

BY ROGER AMES, DAVID HALL
In this elegant volume, Ames and Hall feature the original Chinese texts of the Dao de Jing and translate them into crisp, chiseled English that reads like poetry. Each of the eighty-one brief chapters is followed by clear, thought-provoking commentary exploring the layers of meaning in the text. The book's extensive introduction is a model of accessible scholarship in which Ames and Hall consider the origin of the text, place the emergence of Daoist philosophy in its historical and political context, and outline its central tenets.

Darfur Diaries

Darfur Diaries

Stories Of Survival

BY JEN MARLOWE AND OTHERS
In late 2004 a team of three independent filmmakers trekked to Darfurian refugee camps in eastern Chad and crept across the border into Darfur. They met dozens of Darfurians, and spoke with them about their history, hopes and fears, and the tragedy they are living. Their stories and testimonies, woven together through the personal experience of the filmmakers, and conveyed with political and historical context, provide a much-needed account to help understand Darfur. These are people whose lives, homes, safety and rights deserve to be protected as vigilantly as those of peoples all over the world.

Dark Night Journey

Dark Night Journey

Inward Re-patterning Toward A Life Centered In God

BY SANDRA CRONK
The dark night aptly describes the situation of those who have had a growing sense of God's presence, direction, and consolation and are suddenly bereft of that experience. Aridity, meaninglessness, loss, and pain are hardly the milestones expected on a journey toward God. The author brings a unique perspective to her interpretation of this powerful pathway, and offers sensitive guidance to dark night travelers and those who seek to understand and nurture them.

Daughters Of Juarez (466)

TERESA RODRIGUEZ
SECONDHAND BOOK -as new in dustjacket. Subtitled "A True Story of Serial Murder South of the Border" Terrible harrowing book. Despite the fact that Juarez is a Mexican border city just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, most Americans are unaware that for more than twelve years this city has been the center of an epidemic of horrific crimes against women and girls, consisting of kidnappings, rape, mutilation, and murder, with most of the victims conforming to a specific profile: young, slender, and poor, fueling the premise that the murders are not random.

Quaker Women Preaching And Prophesying In The Colonies And Abroad, 1700-1775

BY REBECCA LARSON
"With meticulous scholarship and graceful style, Rebecca Larson tells the story of the eighteenth century Quaker women ministers who criss-crossed the Atlantic, preaching the Inner Light, and changing forever the perception of women's roles. The authority with which Quaker women later spoke in the reform movements can be traced to these spiritual predecessors." - Margaret Hope Bacon.

The Dead Lie Down

The Dead Lie Down

BY SOPHIE HANNAH
Sold in England as a murder (that may not have been a murder) mystery, over here it is just classed as fiction, but from page 130 of this thriller, a lot of the action revolves around a very accurately described Quaker Quest event in Friends House, London. There is also some swearing (even about George Fox) and it's an unusual book all around. I note Oprah seems to like it!

Dear Benjamin Banneker

BY ANDREA DAVIS-PINKNEY, ILLUSTRATED BY BRIAN PINKNEY
Though the fact that Banneker regularly attended meeting for worship is not mentioned, this is a very good short biography of this remarkable free Black man: an accomplished astronomer and mathematician and the first Black man to publish an almanac. He also wrote Thomas Jefferson as incredibly eloquent letter (which is excerpted here) speaking against slavery. Ages 6-9.

Dear Friend

Dear Friend

Letters And Essays Of Elias Hicks

BY ELIAS HICKS EDITED BY PAUL BUCKLEY
Elias Hicks penned hundreds of letters. They complement his Journal, fleshing out details of his life and beliefs - revealing a man devoted to his family, neighbors and friends, to the RSOF, but more than anything else, a man simply, humbly, and steadfastly devoted to God. Some of his letters recount the trials of a traveling minister in the early 19th century. Most controversially, some put forward his theological beliefs and the scriptural basis for them. Paul Buckley has compiled and transcribed a selection of Elias Hicks' letters and essays from the original manuscripts. Footnotes & appendices explain archaic and unfamiliar words and phrases, and biographical sketches.

The Death Of Innocents

The Death Of Innocents

An Eyewitness Account Of Wrongful Executions

BY HELEN PREJEAN
Sister Helen Prejean traces the historical underpinnings of executions in this country, demonstrating that it is no accident that over 80 percent of executions in the past twenty-five years have been carried out in the former slave states. She also raises profound constitutional questions about an appeals system that decides most death cases on procedural grounds without ever examining their merits. To date, well over one hundred wrongfully convicted persons have been freed from death row. If constitutional protections - due process, assistance of counsel, and equal justice under law - are truly being respected, how is it possible that these people were convicted in the first place?

Death Of The Liberal Class

Death Of The Liberal Class

BY CHRIS HEDGES
The Death of the Liberal Class examines the failure of the liberal class to confront the rise of the corporate state and the consequences of a liberalism that has become profoundly bankrupted. Hedges argues there are five pillars of the liberal establishment - the press, liberal religious institutions, labor unions, universities and the Democratic Party-- and that each of these institutions, more concerned with status and privilege than justice and progress, sold out the constituents they represented. In doing so, the liberal class has become irrelevant to society at large and ultimately the corporate power elite they once served.

What America Owes To Blacks

BY RANDALL ROBINSON
"I have tried in these pages to sketch the outlines of a story that stretches from the dawn of civilization to the present. The dilemma of blacks in the world cannot possibly be understood without taking the long view of history. My intent is to stimulate, not sate. To pose the question. To invite the debate. To cause America to compensate, after three and a half centuries, for a long-avoided wrong." - from the introduction

Deeply Rooted

Deeply Rooted

Alive In The Spirit

BY MARCELLE MARTIN
In this Michener Lecture, Marcelle Martin shares her experiences that transformed her understanding of who we are, how we are united with the divine Mystery, and what we are called to be and do. She tells stories of the hearfelt search of early Friends who found what they had been seeking, then became powerful witnesses to the divine Presence and Power they came to know. This talk considers how, in their time, early Quakers presented a more radical alternative understanding of Christ and life in the Spirit than that espoused by other Christians and chose language that was fresh and evocative, and a way of living that provided visible testimony.

Description Of The Qualifications Necessary

Description Of The Qualifications Necessary

To A Gospel Minister; Advice To Ministers And Elders Among The People Called Quakers

BY SAMUEL BOWNAS
Friends seeking to nurture and deepen ministry in their meetings will find remarkably clear, specific and relevant guidance in this classic work. "Qualification, as this eighteenth century Friend uses the word, implies that one has gone through a process of personal transformation which reorients the ego, the will, and the attention so that one can be trusted purely to receive and purely to give forth an inspired message." (William Taber, from the Introduction) Bownas offers advice on 'qualifying' vocal ministry and other forms of ministry. A careful reading of the book can help Friends learn to discern the difference between the ego and Divine will.

Desert Father

Desert Father

In The Desert With Saint Anthony

BY JAMES COWAN
James Cowan's quest to understand the desert spirituality of St Anthony takes him to Egypt, to the monastery that still exists near the site of Anthony's hermitage, where he meets the monk who becomes his guide and mentor on the journey. He comes to regard Anthony and the colorful men and women who shared his lifestyle in the 4th through 7th centuries with affection and awe. Our modern efforts toward liberation may look different from theirs, he concludes, but the ultimate goal is no different, and Anthony remains a luminous model for anyone who passionately seeks to know God.

The Diary Of Sidney George Fisher Covering The Years 1834-18

A Philadelphia Perspective

BY SIDNEY GEORGE FISHER
SECONDHAND COPY. Margaret Bacon's volume. Not by any means pristine, but a good copy of a 1967 book , that looks like a 1767 book. Binding very slightly cracked. Sidney George Fisher was no Quaker, saying among other things that slavery was evil but necessary... however he was a great diarist and candidly and amusingly commenting on matters political topical and personal from the viewpoint of a rich male who never had to work because of his inherited money. These years are the ones spent in or near Philadelphia.

A Different Mirror

A Different Mirror

A History Of Mulitcultural America

BY RONALD TAKAKI
Upon its first publication, A Different Mirror was hailed by critics and academics everywhere as a dramatic new retelling of our nation's past. Beginning with the colonization of the New World, it recounted the history of America in the voice of the non-Anglo peoples of the United States--Native Americans, African Americans, Jews, Irish Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and others--groups who helped create this country's rich mosaic culture. This new edition of A Different Mirror is a remarkable achievement that grapples with the raw truth of American history and examines the ultimate question of what it means to be an American.

Educated at Harvard in the 1930s, took a Rhodes Scholarship, taught English literature at Princeton, and was the first national director of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Program before becoming president of Swarthmore College in 1953 at the age of 36. His engagement with education, philanthropy, Quakerism and government over the next 16 years resonated with such major issues of the times as McCarthyism, the future of the liberal arts, and race relations. His skill at fundraising provided Swarthmore with a useful endowment. He died in office during a sit-in in January 1969.
