Book List:Basic QuakerismCorporate Discernment
2003 Walton Lecture
BY BEN PINK-DANDELION "I want to think about convincement, how we may view this term in our Yearly Meetings today, and how understanding its original sense could help us regain a language or a frame in which to better describe some of our experience. I want to begin by looking at the profile of our Quakerism, then the nature of early Quaker language in relation to experience, followed by some reflections on the use of language in relation to experience. I'll end with how I think all this may help us revitalise our part of the Quaker movement." The author, from his Introduction.

Quakers And The Second Coming
BY BEN PINK-DANDELION, DOUGLAS GWYN, TIMOTHY PEAT Almost impossible to summarize, a book exploding with ideas and insights. The experience of Christ was so central to the lives of early friends, that it was as if they were living in the second coming. Peat and Gwyn look at Paul's Gospel, and Quaker beliefs and practices. Pink Dandelion looks at how this unrealized idea of the second coming has influenced Quaker thought today. All copies suffer from poor quality binding.keep a rubber band handy!

BY BEN PINK-DANDELION This is the first comprehensive introduction to Quakerism which balances a history of the theology of the Quakers or Friends with an overview of present day practice. It charts the growth of the Quaker movement through the 1650s and 1660s, its different theological emphasis in the eighteenth century, and the schisms of the nineteenth century which resulted in the range of Quaker traditions found around the world today. The book focuses in particular on notions of 'endtime,' 'spiritual intimacy', and what counts as 'the world' as key areas of theological change. The second half of the book uses extracts from Quaker texts to highlight differences in belief among the branches of Friends.

BY BEN PINK-DANDELION In The Liturgies of Quakerism Pink-Dandelion explores the nature of liturgy within a form of worship based in silence. Tracing the original seventeenth-century Quakers' understanding of the `liturgy of silence,' and what for them replaced outward forms used in other parts of Christianity, this book explains how early Quaker understandings of `time,' `history,' and `apocalyptic' led to an inward liturgical form. The practices and understanding of twenty-first century liberal Quakers are explored, showing that these contemporary Quakers maintain the same kind of liturgical form as their ancestors but understand it in a different way.

BY BEN PINK-DANDELION This little book is the latest one volume introduction to Quakerism. Written by Pink Dandelion, Quaker Studies teacher at Woodbrooke, this text presents an overview of Quaker identity, history, worship, theology, belief and ecumenism. Dandelion also offers a concluding chapter on the future of Quakerism and presents a chart o n three branches that he identifies: evangelical, conservative and liberal. Dandelion's approach offers a welcome addition to introductory texts, though not all will agree with the conclusions and characterizations that he asserts.

BY MARGERY POST-ABBOTT, MARY ELLEN CHIJIOKE, BEN PINK-DANDELION, JOHN WILLIAM OLIVER JR "This volume attempts to describe the scope and history of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) worldwide and the modern diversity of its theology and practice. We have sought to provide a balanced view of the many varieties of Quaker faith and practice. Various Friends have long wanted a dictionary or encyclopedia that might serve as a widely accepted reference for distinctive Quaker language and practices as well as an easily accessible guide for the general reader who knows little about the Religious Society of Friends." - from the Preface

Literature, Theology And Sociology In Conversation
BY BEN PINK-DANDELION, DOUGLAS GWYN, RACHEL MUERS, BRIAN PHILLIPS, AND RICHARD STRUM The 'death of tragedy' in the modern era has been debated in recent years, largely in terms of literature and western culture in general. Today, any catastrophe is likely to be labeled a 'tragedy', without any inference of a larger, transcendent horizon or providential design. This book offers new perspectives on the idea of the 'death of tragedy', taking England and the Religious Society of Friends in particular as a case study. The different disciplinary perspectives of the contributing authors bring literature, history, theology and sociology into a creative and revealing conversation.
