Knowing And Not Knowing

Knowing And Not Knowing

The 2007 Jonathan Plummer Lecture

BY MARGARET KATRANIDES
"I want to talk to you today about the ineffable. To describe the indescribable. I truly don't know what I'm supposed to be saying to you today, but I'll start with knowing and not knowing. We are born wanting to know. Watch a baby looking at the world, and you will see an intensity, a passion to know. Look inside yourself; when we are aware of not knowing, there's a tension, that is released when we come to know."

Knowing The Mystery Of Life Within

Knowing The Mystery Of Life Within

Selected Writings Of Isaac Penington In Their Historical And Theological Context

SELECTED AND INTRODUCED BY MELVIN KEISER AND ROSEMARY MOORE
Isaac Penington's writings provide a special insight into the turbulent mid-17th century. In his long struggle for "fullness of life" he produced some of the most profound spiritual counsel in Quaker literature. Part I is Isaac Penington's life in its historical context, through his letters to other Quakers transcribed from manuscript, and Part II presents his spirituality and thought with extracts from published works. With extensive commentary in each part, this is a more comprehensive representation of Penington's writings than ever before, designed to make the manner and substance of his thinking accessible in the 21st century to readers interested in early Quaker thought.

The Known World

The Known World

A Novel

BY EDWARD JONES
In one of the most acclaimed novels in recent memory, Edward P. Jones, two-time National Book Award finalist, tells the story of Henry Townsend, a black farmer and former slave who falls under the tutelage of William Robbins, the most powerful man in Manchester County, Virginia. Making certain he never circumvents the law, Townsend runs his affairs with unusual discipline. But when death takes him unexpectedly, his widow, Caldonia, can't uphold the estate's order and chaos ensues. In a daring and ambitious novel, Jones has woven a footnote of history into an epic that takes an unflinching look at slavery in all of its moral complexities.

The Koran

The Koran

TRANSLATED WITH NOTES BY N J DAWOOD
It is hard to know what is the best English translation of the Koran, Dawood first completed this translation in 1956, and it is a considered and flowing narrative, probably the easiest to read of any I have come across. He has revisited it many times as it was reprinted each time refining the translation. It is short of footnotes, and is best thought of as an introduction, but for the average reader this is probably the best place to start.

The Koran. A Very Short Introduction

The Koran. A Very Short Introduction

BY MICHAEL COOK
In this Very Short Introduction, Michael Cook provides a lucid and direct account of the significance of the Koran both in the modern world and in that of traditional Islam. He gives vivid accounts of its role in Muslim civilization, illustrates the diversity of interpretations championed by traditional and modern commentators, discusses the processes by which the book took shape, and compares it to other scriptures and classics of the historic cultures of Eurasia. Muslims are suspicious of the author because of his earlier writings on Hagarism from which he has now distanced himself.

Language Process Notes

Using Words To Get Beyond Words

BY HARBERT RICE
Harbert Rice, former Clerk of Reno Meeting and a practitioner of Nonviolent Communication, has facilitated AVP workshops in Nevada prisons. He has also led "Experiment with Light" groups and is familiar with Gendlin's Focusing that Rex Ambler found so influential in forming Light Groups. Here he brings all these practices and insights together to show how each group uses an experiential language process, and that we can gain a further understanding of personal change and transformation by the cross fertilization of these practices that "use words (or their Absence) to get beyond words." Quaker experience, especially related to George Fox, is a major part of the book.

Large Circles And Bold Lines

Large Circles And Bold Lines

A Quaker Scientist's Meditation On The Subject Of Meaning In His Life

BY STAN CHERIM
Large Circles and Bold Lines is about a quest for meaning in the life of a Quaker scientist. It is my reconciliation between science and decidedly non-traditional Christian theology and it shows how my identity as a Quaker is the offspring of that union. The Introduction is about Quakerism then comes an exploration of the connection between physical and spiritual reality. Other essays probe the mysteries and miracle of human consciousness and the evolution of a religious identity. Finally, a personally challenging topic that has to do with the eternal question: Why do bad things happen to good people?

The Lark In The Morn

BY ELFRIDA VIPONT

This is the first of two novels full of wisdom and charm about Kit Haverard's emerging vocation as a singer, richly set in the fascinating English Quaker world of the mid-twentieth century-with its silent meetings, committees and mission work, diligent cultivation of knowledge and the arts, and seeking of the light within.

Climate change from now on will not be gradual, maintains Pearce - nature doesn't do gradual. In the past, Earths climate switched from Arctic to tropical in three to five years. It can happen again. The Last Of The Just

The Last Of The Just

BY ANDRE SCHWARZ-BART
In 1885 in the old English city of York, the Jews were brutally massacred. As legend has it, God blessed the only survivor of this pogrom, Rabbi Yom Tov Levy, as one of the 36 Just Men of Jewish tradition, a blessing which extended to one Levy of each succeeding generation. This terrifying Legacy is traced over 8 centuries, from the Spanish Inquisition, to expulsions from England, France, Portugal Germany, and Russia, and to the small Polish village of Zemyock, where the Levys settle for two centuries in relative peace. It is in the then that Ernie Levy emerges, the Last of the Just, in 1920s Germany, as Hitter's sinister star is on the rise and the agonies of Auschwitz loom on the horizon.

What The Gospels Really Teach About Jesus' Final Days In Jerusalem

BY MARCUS BORG AND JOHN DOMINIC CROSSAN
As both authors reacted to and responded to questions about Mel Gibson's blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, they discovered that many Christians are unclear on the details of events during the week leading up to Jesus's crucifixion. Using the gospel of Mark as their guide, Borg and Crossan present a day-by-day account of Jesus's final week of life. They begin their story on Palm Sunday with two triumphal entries into Jerusalem. The first entry, that of Roman governor Pontius Pilate leading Roman soldiers into the city, symbolized military strength. The second heralded a new kind of moral hero who was praised by the people as he rode in on a humble donkey.

A Lasting Gift

A Lasting Gift

The Journal And Selected Writings Of Sandra L. Cronk

BY SANDRA CRONK, EDITED BY MARTHA PAXSON GRUNDY, FOREWORD BY PARKER PALMER
A Lasting Gift records the life and faith of Sandra (Sonnie) L. Cronk, Quaker author, teacher, and spiritual guide. A gifted storyteller, Sonnie's journals reveal a deep love of God and religion from childhood on. We find times of consolation, a clear sense of leading and knowledge of accompaniment, as well as times of questioning, resistance, darkness and doubt. She does not hesitate to critique where others (including Quakers) fall short in living and supporting one another in a God-centered life, in which she learned that "no circumstance could separate me from God."

Humor And The Spiritual Journey

BY HOWARD MACY
Humor floods our lives. We use it to entertain, to reduce stress and promote health, to smooth social interactions (or to make people bristle), to sell products of all kinds, to persuade about ideas, and much more. Humor is an important and often overlooked part of the spiritual life. Humor skills can be learned so, in an accessible and funny way, Laughing Pilgrims: Humor and the Spiritual Journey aims to teach readers effective skills for interpreting and creating humor in their daily lives. Whether it is a 'spiritual gift' or 'spiritual discipline' humor (and its distortions) can powerfully reveal and shape our spiritual development.
