Making Peace - Healing A Violent World

Making Peace - Healing A Violent World

EDITED BY CAROLYN MCCONNELL AND SARAH RUTH VANGELDER
Peace isn't just the absence of violence. A prison inmate, a divorced parent, a pastor, a diplomat, a farmer and others tell stories of creating peace. From the pages of YES! magazine, stories of peacemakers.... Joanna Macy, Wendell Berry, Thomas Berry, Troy Chapman, Walter Wink, Jamal Rahman, Michael Nagler, Quaker Peter Morse and others write on alternatives to violence, hate and domination. These stories suggest we needn't stand by as violence permeates our media, homes, schools, and international affairs. There is a better way.

The Man Who Named The Clouds

The Man Who Named The Clouds

BY JULIE HANNAH
Quaker Luke Howard was a boy with his head in the clouds. When he was ten he began keeping a weather journal. Eventually, he joined a club whose members wanted to learn about science. They did experiments and wrote reports. Luke wanted to classify clouds, though many others had failed at this. At last, using the Linnaean classification as inspiration, Luke successfully created a system for naming the clouds which is still in use today. This story of Luke Howard is interspersed with the weather journal of a modern-day child working on a science project.

Margaret Fell And The End Of Time

Margaret Fell And The End Of Time

The Theology Of The Mother Of Quakerism

BY SALLY BRUYNEEL
This book unusually looks at Margaret Fell as a religious author or theologian in her own right. Sally Bruyneel systematically analyzes Fell's writings on both Quaker and orthodox Christian subjects, ranging from the Inward Light to eschatology to the Trinity. In doing so she demonstrates that Fell was deeply influenced by Biblical apocalyptic literature and the strong eschatological expectations of her time, which became central to her work with the Jews, for her defense of the spirituality equality of women, and for her promotion of the Quaker testimony of peace.suggested price $39.95 our price $35.95

Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science

Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science

An Astronomer Among The American Romantics

BY RENEE BERGER
Born and raised on Nantucket, Quaker Maria Mitchell apprenticed with her father, an amateur astronomer. In 1847, thanks to her diligent "sweeps" of the sky, Mitchell discovered the eponymous comet that would catapult her to international fame. Soon she was hired as the "computer of Venus," a sort of human calculator, for the U.S. Nautical Almanac. Mitchell later joined the founding faculty at Vassar, where she sadly watched opportunities for her students vanish as science morphed from a private pursuit to a public profession, and the increasingly male scientific establishment closed ranks.
