The Politics Of Jesus - Vicit Agnus Noster

The Politics Of Jesus - Vicit Agnus Noster

BY JOHN HOWARD YODER
Tradition has painted a portrait of a Savior who stands aloof from governmental concerns and who calls his disciples to an apolitical life. But such a picture of Jesus is far from accurate, according to Mennonite theologian John Yoder. This watershed work in New Testament ethics leads us to a Savior who was deeply concerned with the agenda of politics and the related issues of power, status, and right relations. By canvassing Luke's gospel, Yoder argues convincingly that the true impace of Jesus' life and ministry on his disciples' social behavior points to a specific kind of Christian pacifism in which the "cross of Christ is the model of Christian social efficacy."

Stories Of Decency, Common Sense, And Other Endangered Species

BY PHILIP GULLEY
In this collection of stories told from his own life experiences, Gulley's musings on such topics as leisure, marriage, faith, enjoyment, and more hold an earthy wisdom that reminds us of what we hold dear, and what's truly important in life. These stories reflect the kind of conversations Gulley overheard in his youth, in a time when neighbors gathered on front porches across America, a glass of lemonade in hand, the sounds of crickets buzzing in the air, and lazy stories spilled from lips from generation to generation.

The Power Of A Positive No - How To Say No

The Power Of A Positive No - How To Say No

And Still Get To Yes - Paperback Version

BY WILLIAM URY
"No" is perhaps the most important and certainly the most powerful word in the language. Every day we find ourselves in situations where we need to say No - to people at work, at home, and in our communities-because No is the word we must use to protect ourselves and to stand up for everything and everyone that matters to us. But as we all know, the wrong No can also destroy what we most value by alienating and angering people. That's why saying No the right way is crucial. The secret to saying No without destroying relationships lies in the art of the Positive No, a proven technique that anyone can learn.

The Life And Writings Of Sarah Moore Grimke

BY PAMELA DURSO
Esteemed Quaker Sarah Moore Grimke (1792-1873) wanted to become "a useful member of society," a goal she met through her contributions to social reform during the 1830s. The main issue during that decade was slavery, and Sarah became a spokeswoman and leader in the abolition movement But Sarah did more than fight for the rights of slaves. Perhaps her greatest contribution was as an advocate of women's rights.

The Powers That Be

The Powers That Be

Theology For A New Millenium

BY WALTER WINK
In The Powers That Be renowned theologian and biblical scholar Walter Wink helps us reformulate our ancient religious concepts - such as God and Satan, angels and demons, principalities and powers - light of what we now know. Wink's theology is shaped as much by his experience in the civil rights movement and the fight against apartheid in South Africa, as by his study of the Bible. This is in large part a digest of his Powers trilogy, particularly the third volume-Engaging the Powers.

Practical Mystic

Practical Mystic

Science, Religion And A. S. Eddington

BY MATTHEW STANLEY
A. S. Eddington (1882-1944) was a scientific pioneer and a devout Quaker. As a leading astrophysicist he still maintained his religious belief throughout his scientific career and also defended the interrelation of science and religion while drawing inspiration from both. For instance, at a time when a strict adherence to deductive principles of physics had proved fruitless for understanding the nature of stars, insights from Quaker mysticism led Eddington to argue that an outlook less concerned with certainty and more concerned with further exploration was necessary to overcome the obstacles of incomplete and uncertain knowledge.

The Practice Of The Presence Of God

The Practice Of The Presence Of God

BY BROTHER LAWRENCE WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY DOROTHY DAY
The great Catholic humanitarian Dorothy Day identifies these writings as a hidden treasure in her introduction to this edition, and says that the collection of letters and writings and meant to help the reader identify a "sense of the presence of God in the soul, and indeed in the world about us." These writings from the mid-1600s have startling clarity and relevance for the modern reader. Friends may identify with Brother Lawrence's assertion that "We may make a chapel of our heart" and that "There is no need to cry very loudly, for He is nearer to us than we think."

The Practice Of The Love Of God

The Practice Of The Love Of God

Php 374

BY KENNETH BOULDING
Dare to love God! Dare to practice that love everywhere in God's family, seeing the divine likeness in everyone, mixture of earth and heaven though we be! This challenge was raised by Kenneth Boulding some 50 years ago and is no less relevant and provocative today. He tells us that we are born to love, that we are living parts of a living whole, and that there are no boundaries in God's whole kingdom, & concludes with his vision for the world and his assurance that there is no room for despair, that God is always redeeming the world, that from the depths of misery there will be "a reawakening of divine love, a new springtime to the weary earth."

Practicing Discernment Together

Practicing Discernment Together

Finding God's Way Forward In Decision Making

BY LON FENDALL, JAN WOOD, AND BRUCE BISHOP
Group discernment is an essential ingredient of anything that Quakers seek to do together, and a central part of Quaker process. Even the smallest Bible study group or informal gathering makes decisions. That decision making carries with it the potential of strengthening the spiritual depth of each member of the group, and of discovering God's will - but only if the participants understand and abide by the process. "In concise, lucid prose, illustrated with modern day case studies and stories from the bible, they discuss the attitudes, skills, and steps that help us to find God's leadings for us as meeting communities." - Chel Avery

Practicing Peace In Times Of War - Paperback

Practicing Peace In Times Of War - Paperback

A Buddhist Perspective

BY PEMA CHODRON
Chodron draws on Buddhist teachings to explore the origins of aggression and war, explaining that they lie nowhere but within our own hearts and minds. She goes on to explain that, remarkably, the way in which we as individuals respond to challenges in our everyday lives can mean the difference between perpetuating a culture of violence or creating a new culture of compassion. With war and violence flaring all over the world, from Iraq to Darfur to London, most of us are left feeling utterly helpless. In this book Pema Chodron insists that our world will begin to change when each of us, one by one, begins to work for peace at the level of our own behavior, our own habits of action.

Prayer - Beginning Again

Prayer - Beginning Again

Php 339

BY SHEILA KEANE
"I was motivated to write this pamphlet about prayer because I felt I didn't know nearly enough about it, and I wanted to learn what others had to say about praying. Of course, in the past I have read plenty of books and pamphlets, attended workshops and I had many conversations to learn about prayer, but always I felt something was missing. With this paper I tried something new; I prayed the learning, and that has made all the difference. Prayer is a mystery of the spiritual life which is learned by doing as much as anything else. I learned most by actually trying the techniques of prayer taught to me by others, experimenting with my own personal styles." - the author
