Quaker Aesthetics

Quaker Aesthetics

Reflections On A Quaker Ethic In American Design And Consumption, 1720-1920

EDITED BY EMMA LAPSANSKY AND ANNE VERPLANCK
The notion of a uniquely Quaker style in architecture, dress, and domestic interiors is a subject with which scholars have long grappled, since Quakers have traditionally held both an appreciation for high quality workmanship and a distrust of ostentation. Detailing how Quakers have manufactured, bought, and used such goods as clothing, furniture, and buildings, the essays in Quaker Aesthetics reveal a much more complicated picture than that of a simple people with simple tastes.

The Quaker Bible Reader

The Quaker Bible Reader

EDITED BY PAUL BUCKLEY AND STEPHEN ANGELL
Thirteen very different Quakers look at portions of scripture, describe what they find, and how they found it. Their goal is to encourage every Friend to engage the Bible, "not passively accepting someone else's interpretation; not looking for 'the good parts' and skipping the rest; not contorting scripture to support pre-determined ideas - but entering into a dialog with this ancient book, exploring your own assumptions about God, and deepening your relationship with the divine." - Marty Paxson Grundy Contributors include John Punshon, Howard Macy, Beckey Phipps, Esther Mombo, Anthony Prete, and Deborah Shaw.

Life Lessons In Simplicity, Service, And Common Sense

BY ROBERT LAWRENCE SMITH
Since its publication there has been a great deal of controversy over this book. As reviewed by Chel Avery in Friends Journal:"This well-produced, highly readable, lunch-bag-sized book by a birthright Friend... is probably the best-promoted and most accessible title about Quakerism currently available in the mainstream book market. It is too good to ignore and too flawed to recommend without serious reservations.... There will be something to trouble everyone-and from this, I have high hopes for continuing frutitful dialogue."

A Quaker In The Zendo

A Quaker In The Zendo

Php 370

BY STEVE SMITH
"At a time of my life when I had drifted far from my Quaker origins, I found the practice of Zen meditation to be clarifying, healing and liberating. Curiously this Asian spiritual practice led me back to the Society of Friends: the more I practice Zen, the more thoroughly Quaker I become. The spiritual insights of Christianity and Quakerism have regained for me fresh depth, power and charisma. Within the earliest records of Quakerism, in the writings of George Fox and other early Friends, I find - to my wonder and delight - remarkably explicit guidelines for spiritual practice that are often diluted or obscured in contemporary unprogrammed Friends' worship.".

Varieties Of Religious Experience Among Friends

BY HOWARD BRINTON
For over three centuries Quakers have used the spiritual journal to record their spiritual life and journeys. Some, especially those of famous Friends, were published; others lay in attics or on the shelves of libraries. Here Brinton looks on them as a whole class for the first time, stressing the importance of examining the original unedited texts. He shows the reality of Quaker ideals and testimonies as actually lived by Friends through the ages.

The Quaker Meeting Houses Of Ireland

BY DAVID BUTLER
After David Butler completed his Quaker Meeting Houses of Britain in 1999 he looked across the Irish Sea. In the course of several visits he has unearthed forgotten records and secluded sites with energy and enthusiasm. This book is illustrated with his distinctive plans and sketches, and is supplemented by an appendix which amplifies many of the uniquely Quaker aspects of these buildings. This is the only account of the history and features of about 150 meeting houses and 100 burial grounds, since Friends first came to Ireland in 1654.
