Quaker Summer

Quaker Summer

A Novel

BY LISA SAMSON
When Heather Reeves wrecks her Suburban outside Baltimore, Maryland, two elderly Quaker women come to her rescue. Inspired by their radical lives, Heather experiences a summer of awakening and grace. "Samson's unflinching exploration of childhood bullying, as well as inner-city poverty and drug culture, are rivaled only by her portrayal of the soul-desiccating acquisitiveness in which many Christians engage.... Unlike many Christian novelists, Samson does not tidily resolve every single problem her heroine faces, but instead paints an emotionally and spiritually luminous portrait of a soul beckoned by God." - Publishers Weekly

Quaker Summer Sale Edition

Quaker Summer Sale Edition

BY LISA SAMPSON
Heather Curridge is coming unhinged, she is a woman who has everything - a mansion on the lake, a loving son, a heart-surgeon husband, and soapstone countertops - yet she still feels miserable inside. Sometimes you have to go a little bit crazy to find the life you were meant to live, and when Heather spends the summer with two ancient Quaker sisters and a crusty nun in a downtown homeless shelter, she suddenly finds herself at a crossroads.

Quaker Views On Mysticism

Quaker Views On Mysticism

Php 375

BY MARGERY POST-ABBOTT
This pamphlet grew from the author's search for ways to interpret and respond to the joyful, but none-the-less, life shattering, mystical experiences that have transformed her life. She considers how Friends today recognize and respond to the guidance of the Inward Light of Christ and describes varying Quaker views on mysticism and the mystical. She touches upon the need to continually test leadings in the silence of Quaker worship and in the arms of Quaker community.

Quaker Witness As Sacrament

Quaker Witness As Sacrament

Php 397

BY DANIEL SNYDER
What happens when we understand prayer as a kind of "inward activism" and political witness to Friends testimonies as a kind of "outward prayer?" Dan Snyder has wrestled with the apparent dichotomy between the pulls of an inward call to a spiritual life of contemplation and an outward call to respond to the problems of the world. He has concluded that rather than competing with each other, these two calls are parts of a single whole that must be joined if he is to be faithful to either. The author offers his own insights and the shared discoveries that have emerged from exploring these questions with students at Pendle Hill. Discussion questions included.

A Quaker Woman's Cookbook

A Quaker Woman's Cookbook

The Domestic Cookery Of Elizabeth Ellicott Lea

BY ELIZABETH LEA, EDITED BY WILLIAM WOYS-WEAVER
Published in 1846 this is a classic of American cookery, collecting basic rural recipes in a way no other book did. The recipes are simple and delicious. The book also includes such things as cures for chilblains and instructions on how to air mattresses. Elizabeth Ellicott Lea's Quakerism pervades the book and William Weaver, in his long and comprehensive introduction, places her in the Quaker world of the time, and seeks to explain the Quaker "politics" that meant this successful book was never mentioned in her obituary or in the Quaker journals of the time, whilst another by a Unitarian was.

Emotional Life, Memory, And Radicalism In The Lives Of Women Friends, 1800-1920

BY SANDRA STANLEY HOLTON
In 1839 Elizabeth Priestman married the British Quaker politician John Bright. A collection of personal and public papers has surfaced that reveals the lives of their circle, women Friends active in radical politics and the women's movement. The book examines the building of extensive Quaker networks working for change; the relationship between Quaker religious values and women's participation in civil society and radical politics and the women's rights movement. There are also fresh perspectives on the political career of John Bright, provided by his fond but frank women kin.

Quakerism

A Religion Meaningful For Today's World

BY PHILADELPHIA YEARLY MEETING
"I was delighted when Quakerism: A Religion Meaningful for Today's World was produced because it covers what I wish to convey in brief, easily readable form. I particularly appreciate the mix of information about beliefs (including brief information about the testimonies), history, accomplishments, structure, practices, and resouces. The inclusion of illustrations is critical to lighten the text, making the text less dense and formidable-looking to the novice inquirer. The illustrations make it great for young people down to middle school age - a great need!" - Peggy Morscheck Each $2.50 for fewer than 10, Each $2.00 for multiples of 10, each $1.00 for 100+.

Quakerism & Science

Quakerism & Science

Php 343

BY CALVIN SCHWABE
"From my experience, I affirm that science and Quakerism not only have more in common than does science with other avenues of religious expression, but that wider recognition of that fact could encourage both inner and outer peace." Scwabe reflects on this in the light of his research on biomedicine and two thirds world migratory pastoralism

Quakerism, A Theology For Our Time

Quakerism, A Theology For Our Time

American Edition

BY PATRICIA A WILLIAMS
Like Barclay's Apology of 1676 this is a substantial work on Quaker theology, yet it is written for the general reader. It elucidates the Quaker theology of the Inward Light, as found in Barclay and in George Fox. In their theology, the primary authority is the power within all people that can transform them into loving, compassionate, and peaceful people. Modern Biblical criticism and the discoveries of science enhance the original Quakerism and render it uniquely suited to our time. The author has taught at Universities in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Currently, she lives 'off the grid' in the mountains of Virginia in a solar home she built herself.

A Quakerly Guide To Outreach

A Quakerly Guide To Outreach

BY QUAKER OUTREACH IN LONDON
"Outreach is the communication of Quaker ideas to those outside our circle. To let people know who we are, where to contact us, how we meet and worship as well as the essence of our spirituality, and of course when and how to share this knowledge with the general public. Outreach hopes to enhance the lives of those whom we address whilst also revitalizing our own spiritual lives and beliefs as we explore them with others. Outreach does require both prior planning and sustained commitment. This guide explains what outreach is and how to manage it within your meeting." - from the Introduction

Quakers & Nazis

Quakers & Nazis

Inner Light In Outer Darkness

BY HANS SCHMITT
Describes Quakers' attempts to mitigate the suffering among not only victims of Nazism but Nazi sympathizers in Austria and Lithuania as well. Virtually all the Berlin Quakers hid Jews during the war and opposed the Nazis even after they lost their jobs and were harassed by the Gestapo. Risking their lives, the Friends persisted in efforts to alleviate suffering. How should a Quaker behave in a meeting for worship with a policeman present? Spies didn't stop Friends in worship from openly criticizing Hitler, but they did imprison some Friends

The Quakers - A Very Short Introduction

BY BEN PINK-DANDELION

Written by Pink Dandelion, Quaker Studies teacher at Woodbrooke, this text presents an overview of Quaker identity, history, worship, theology, belief and ecumenism. Dandelion also offers a concluding chapter on the future of Quakerism and presents a chart o n three branches that he identifies: evangelical, conservative and liberal. Dandelion's approach offers a welcome addition to introductory texts, though not all will agree with the conclusions and characterizations that he asserts.
