Various Friends have long wanted a dictionary or encyclopedia that might serve as a widely accepted reference for distinctive Quaker language and practices as well as an easily accessible guide for the general reader who knows little about the Religious Society of Friends." - from the Preface

Tomorrow's God

Tomorrow's God

GEERING, LLOYD GEORG
SECONDHAND, in good condition though a little scuffed. According to Lloyd Geering, the world we inhabit is largely a product of our own making. We supply its meaning. Thus "God," a central symbol of meaning, is entirely a human creation. In Tomorrow's God, Geering traces the collective "drift toward meaning" that gave rise to the various religions and explores the reasons they are now in decline. He argues that, for our own survival, we must consciously create new meaning for our lives and shows how the Christian tradition may lead toward a new world of meaning.

African American Women's Clubs In Turn-of-the-century Chicago

BY ANNE KNUPFER
During the Progressive Era, over 150 African American women's clubs flourished in Chicago. Through these clubs, women created a vibrant social world of their own, seeking to achieve social and political uplift by educating themselves and the members of their communities. In politics, they battled legal discrimination, advocated anti-lynching laws, and fought for suffrage. In the tradition of other mothering, in which the the community shares in the care and raising of all its children, the club women established kindergartens, youth clubs, and homes for the elderly.

Towards Tragedy/reclaiming Hope

Literature, Theology And Sociology In Conversation

BY BEN PINK-DANDELION, DOUGLAS GWYN, RACHEL MUERS, BRIAN PHILLIPS, AND RICHARD STRUM
The 'death of tragedy' in the modern era has been debated in recent years, largely in terms of literature and western culture in general. Today, any catastrophe is likely to be labeled a 'tragedy', without any inference of a larger, transcendent horizon or providential design. This book offers new perspectives on the idea of the 'death of tragedy', taking England and the Religious Society of Friends in particular as a case study. The different disciplinary perspectives of the contributing authors bring literature, history, theology and sociology into a creative and revealing conversation.

The Trader, The Owner, The Slave

The Trader, The Owner, The Slave

Parallel Lives In The Age Of Slavery

BY JAMES WALVIN
John Newton (1725-1807), best-known as the writer of "Amazing Grace," was a slave captain who marshaled his human cargoes with a brutality that he looked back on with shame and contrition. Thomas Thistlewood (1721-1786), lived his life in a remote corner of western Jamaica, and his unique diary provides some of the most revealing images of a slave-owner's life in the most valuable of all British slave colonies. Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797), was practically unknown thirty years ago, but is now an iconic figure in black history and his experience as a slave who speaks out for the lives of millions who went unrecorded.

The Transformation Of American Quakerism

The Transformation Of American Quakerism

BY THOMAS HAMM
In 1800 American Quakers lived in a unique religious environment, characterized by quietism and "the plain life." By 1900 the religious sect had become virtually indistinguishable from the Protestant mainstream, absorbed by the same questions of modernism that troubled other denominations. Thomas Hamm's detailed historical study sheds new light on this transformation, filling a major gap in the literature of American Quakerism and American religion as a whole.

The Transition Handbook

The Transition Handbook

From Oil Dependency To Local Resilience

BY ROB HOPKINS
The Transition Handbook shows how the changes ahead can lead to the rebirth of local communities that will grow more of their own food, generate their own power, and build their own houses using local materials. There are now over 30 "transition towns" in the UK,& Australasia. They provide valuable experience and lessons-learned for those of us on this side of the Atlantic. With little proactive thinking at the governmental level, communities are taking matters into their own hands and acting locally. If your town is not a transition town, this upbeat guide offers you the tools for starting the process.

Traveling Between The Lines

Europe In 1938: The Trip Journal Of John F. Randolph And His Daughter's Response

BY REBECCA MCBRIDE
Quaker author Rebecca McBride writes in response to her father's journal of a trip taken by her parents to Europe in 1938, one year before the start of World War II. John F. Randolph, 34, a mathematician, and his wife Margaret, 27, traveled by train, rented bicycles, and slept in youth hostels--a typical tour in an atypical time. Knowing what took place in Germany in 1938 and what would follow throughout Europe, the author began to research the historical context for the trip and ask, how much did they know, and what did they see? The book combines her father's trip journal with her historical commentary, including references to Quakers and AFSC involvement in helping Jewish refugees.
