A Personal View Of The Search For God
BY CARL SAGAN In his down-to-earth voice, the late astronomer Carl Sagan discusses the relationship between religion and science and describes his own personal search to understand the nature of the sacred in the numinous vastness of the cosmos. A History
BY COLIN SPENCER Spencer traces vegetarianism back to 600 B.C. He presents the controversial thesis that early hominids abstained from meat eating and argues that we do not need meat to survive. In what is probably the book's most engaging section, Spencer demonstrates how vegetarianism has been central to utopian thought throughout the ages. It was a hallmark of Plato's Republic, as well as a staple of Hinduism, Buddhism, the Manichean sect of Christianity, and Seventh Day Adventism. Vegetarianism was also a personal practice of Pythagoras, Leonardo da Vinci, and Gandhi. The ideology of vegetarianism - often tied to pacifism and progressive thought- has been regularly attacked throughout history.

Repainting The Christian Faith
BY ROB BELL "God doesn't change, but times do, and Rob Bell, founding pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan, believes new times call for us to remain open and flexible, living with passion and conviction….An advocate of a postmodern approach to faith, Bell is vulnerable about his own struggles with doubt and understanding Scripture. Joy, awe, raw honesty, and an appreciation for the mystery of faith permeate the pages." - Christianity Today

Marth Wright And Women's Rights
BY SHERRY PENNEY AND JAMES LIVINGSTON "A very dangerous woman" is what Martha Coffin Wright's conservative neighbors considered her, because of her work in the women's rights and abolition movements. In 1848, Wright and her older sister Lucretia Mott were among the five brave women who organized the historic Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. Wright remained a prominent figure in the women's movement until her death in 1875 at age sixty-eight, when she was president of the National Woman Suffrage Association. At age twenty-six, she attended the 1833 founding of the American Anti-Slavery. Active in the Underground Railroad, she sheltered fugitive slaves and was a close friend and supporter of Harriet Tubman.

In the midst of this compelling story are clues to creating a loving, long-term marriage. Those who have lost a spouse will find companionship on their own journey through grief. At the heart of it all is Tom Mullen's celebration of a wonderful marriage-"Oh, what a ride we had!"

BY JANEAL TURNBULL-RAVNDAL What is it like to spend time in prison for demonstrating? Janeal Ravndal writes of her week in Philadelphia's Federal Detention Center after she chose to ignore orders not to block entry to a courthouse as the U.S. began to attack Iraq early in 2003. Janeal shares movingly of joyful moments and discouraging times, of shared prayers and music-making, and of the satisfaction of creating art from the sparse "found" materials in a cell. Conscious of the dramatic contrast between her "very good week" and the days of a typical inmate, she was acutely aware of what a different world prison would be for those who found little joy or companionship there.

BY JAN DE HARTOG Friend Hartog writes here of his mother. She devoted herself to her egocentric husband's religious calling. During their marriage this woman's only concern was to enable her husband to hearken to "the voice of God." After his death she continued his work and her courage became evident during her World War II internment in a Japanese camp in the Dutch East Indies, when she managed to arrange a cease-fire between the Dutch Army and Indonesian guerillas. Finally, she was faced with the ultimate test of her spirit: a diagnosis of a cancer too far advanced for treatment. De Hartog tells us how his mother's blazing courage through it all inspired his own spiritual awakening.

In Search Of The Contemplative Life
BY PATRICIA HAMPL This beguiling account of Patricia Hampl's spiritual quest at first seeks little more than to rub out the Catholic-school upbringing that clung to her like an Ash Wednesday smudge. Hampl's "old world" pilgrimage in the footsteps of saints Francis and Clare is overrun by crotchety English agnostics, American Franciscan friars and nuns, and various eccentric seekers. She then travels to Lourdes, and recoils from the surging crowds with their candles and incurable diseases. She finally finds the communion she seeks in a Californian monastery, amid the smell of wild rose bushes and the whine of chainsaws felling redwoods.

The American Revolution Tests Quaker Principles In This Romantic Novel
BY ELIZABETH GRAY VINING This fictional account of a true incident reflects the timeless conflict between individual rights and revolutionary excess. In 1777 Caleb Middleton of Philadelphia is furious that his Quaker father has closed the family-owned iron foundry rather than permit its products to be used for military purposes in the Revolutionary War. A believer in Independence, Caleb is insulted when he is then arrested for disloyalty by the government he supports and is exiled, without trial or even formal charge, to rural Virginia along with 19 other Quakers also falsely accused of disloyalty. He falls in love with Loveday Parry and eventually returns to Philadelphia a wiser man.

BY MARY LORD Mary Lord, a professional peacemaker, asks, "Is peace-making just an idealistic vision, or does it actually work?" and answers, "For me, the acceptance of pacifism on a spiritual foundation has led me to seek to learn how to be a practical worker for peace. Peacemaking, after all, is practical dynamic problem solving.. If we are to create a realistic image of the peaceable community, we have to confront the unreality of our own vision. Our visions of the Peaceable Kingdom, our visions of community, our visions of peace have to confront reality." Mary Lord formerly worked for FCNL and currently serves AFSC as Assistant General Secretary for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

A Novel
BY MARGARET ELPHINSTONE Voyageurs is the story of the quest of an early 19th century English Quaker to find his sister in the wilderness of North America. Elphinstone has written both a well-researched Quaker book and a riveting adventure story. Mark Greenhow, the main character, faces challenges to his beliefs as he journeys through a world of roughneck fur traders, British spies, and embattled Native Americans. The author presents each of Mark's inward struggles sympathetically and authentically. The book is peopled with complex characters that stay with you. This book is both a thoughtful exploration of one person's ability to maintain a Quaker identity in the midst of many challenges and a page turner.

The Diary Of Angelina Grimke, 1828-1835
EDITED BY CHARLES WILBANKS The diary that Angelina Grimke (1805-1879) kept from 1828 through 1835 offers a window into the spiritual struggles and personal evolution of a woman who would become one of the nation's most fervent abolitionists. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, and an heir to a family enterprise dependent on slave labor, Grimke was an unlikely supporter of emancipation. Only after years of inner turmoil did she leave the South to join her sister Sarah in the crusade against slavery. This book chronicles the private spiritual and intellectual journey that preceded her public career and pushed her to the forefront of the abolitionist movement.
