The Works Of James Nayler - Volume 4

The Works Of James Nayler - Volume 4

BY JAMES NAYLER, EDITED BY LICIA KUENNING
This is the final volume of Nayler's complete works. The tone of his later writings is a little less strident than that of his earlier ones, and he has more to say about the virtue of "meekness," but he remains uncompromising about total obedience to Christ within as the only road to salvation. Some of these writings were smuggled out of prison, and some could not be graced with his name until enough time had passed for that name to be less of a scandal. Three of his late essays were co-authored with other leading Quakers (two with Richard Hubberthorne and one with George Whitehead). A very comprehensive and useful index to the four volume set is included.

The World As It Is

Dispatches On The Myth Of Human Progress

BY CHRIS HEDGES
Drawing on two decades of experience as a war correspondent and based on his numerous columns for Truthdig, Chris Hedges presents The World As It Is, a panorama of America at home and abroad, from the coarsening effect of America's War on Terror to the front lines in the Middle East and South Asia and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Underlying his reportage is a constant struggle with the nature of war and its impact on human civilization. "War is always about betrayal," Hedges notes. "It is about betrayal of the young by the old, of cynics by idealists, and of soldiers and Marines by politicians."

The World In My Heart

BY JO FARROW
This is a reprint of Jo Farrow's highly enjoyable 1990 book. The author, a latecomer to Friends, examines journeys, explorations and homecomings. She reflects on the experiences which have shaped her life and led her to value Quaker spirituality and feminism, and to integrate them with what has been important for her in the Christian tradition and the insights of humanistic psychology as a way of coming home to herself. She says, "I wanted to be human, not holy."

The World Is Our Cloister

The World Is Our Cloister

A Guide To The Modern Religious Life

BY JENNIFER KAVANAGH
The dedicated religious life of monks and nuns has a fascination for many of us - at a distance. We live in the world we have, and it's hard to figure out how to do it in a God-filled way. The World is Our Cloister, written by Friend Jennifer Cavanaugh, is about the new religious life. It is a guide to living the devotional life, not behind the walls of a monastery, but in the world. It's about engagement in the world as well as withdrawal, the balance between a life of action and one of contemplation; how to be in the world but not of it. It is also a guide to the mystical experience at the heart of all religion..

Quaker Engagement In Commercial And Public Affairs

BY TONY STOLLER
This, the 2001 Swarthmore lecture, is the author's wake-up call to alert us to a falling-away from our previous tradition of concern in and support for those engaged in, commerce and public affairs. From his own experience he argues that, just as for Jacob confronting the Angel, this engagement is not without personal risk, and involves challenges for Quaker corporate work. His first-hand knowledge of the workings of commercial organizations, the media and public regulatory bodies encourages him to assert that engagement in these fields is worthwile witness for the individual and a proper obligation for our society.

The author has created a truly inspirational character whose spiritual life, based on a strong Quaker foundation, is reflected at the culmination of her earthly life in a remarkable 'year of grace.' "Beautifully written, this story of a spirit and action-filled last adventure will speak to many conditions, from that of us "oldies" nearing the end of our own journey, to that of the 'youngies' just finding the trail.
