M. L. K.

M. L. K.

The Journey Of A King

BY TONYA BOLDEN
Tonya Bolden brings words and pictures together to tell the life story of one of America's greatest figures: Martin Luther King, Jr. or M.L.K. Central to the story is King's belief that agape-the selfless love for one's neighbor-is the rope that binds all peoples together. This philosophy came forward in his sermons, in his daily practice, and especially in his support of nonviolent protests. More than 80 photographs of M.L.K. are juxtaposed with images of his wife and family, of his fellow protestors, and of other leaders of the day. A tribute to a great human being, M.L.K. will surely inspire young readers. Not just another book on Martin Luther King, Jr., but a great book about him.

Made From Scratch

Discovering The Pleasures Of A Handmade Life

BY JENNA WOGINRICH
Jenna Woginrich set out to build a more self-sufficient lifestyle by learning homesteading skills. She didn't own land or have much practical experience beyond a few forays into knitting and soap making... After moving to a rented farmhouse in Idaho, she learned to raise chickens, keep bees, and grow her own food. This is the story of her joyful, dramatic, and sometimes sorrowful journey toward self-reliance. Along the way, she learned that an abundance of enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment could make up for a lack of knowledge, and that reaching out to others for mentoring and guidance could help her reconnect with her community.

The Man Who Named The Clouds

BY JULIE HANNAH
Quaker Luke Howard was a boy with his head in the clouds. When he was ten he began keeping a weather journal. Eventually, he joined a club whose members wanted to learn about science. They did experiments and wrote reports. Luke wanted to classify clouds, though many others had failed at this. At last, using the Linnaean classification as inspiration, Luke successfully created a system for naming the clouds which is still in use today. This story of Luke Howard is interspersed with the weather journal of a modern-day child working on a science project.

Margaret Fell And The End Of Time

The Theology Of The Mother Of Quakerism

BY SALLY BRUYNEEL
This book unusually looks at Margaret Fell as a religious author or theologian in her own right. Sally Bruyneel systematically analyzes Fell's writings on both Quaker and orthodox Christian subjects, ranging from the Inward Light to eschatology to the Trinity. In doing so she demonstrates that Fell was deeply influenced by Biblical apocalyptic literature and the strong eschatological expectations of her time, which became central to her work with the Jews, for her defense of the spirituality equality of women, and for her promotion of the Quaker testimony of peace.suggested price $39.95 our price $35.95

Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science

Maria Mitchell And The Sexing Of Science

An Astronomer Among The American Romantics

BY RENEE BERGER
Born and raised on Nantucket, Quaker Maria Mitchell apprenticed with her father, an amateur astronomer. In 1847, thanks to her diligent "sweeps" of the sky, Mitchell discovered the eponymous comet that would catapult her to international fame. Soon she was hired as the "computer of Venus," a sort of human calculator, for the U.S. Nautical Almanac. Mitchell later joined the founding faculty at Vassar, where she sadly watched opportunities for her students vanish as science morphed from a private pursuit to a public profession, and the increasingly male scientific establishment closed ranks.
