A Guide For Newcomers

BY GEOFFREY DURHAM
British friend Geoffrey Durham looks at modern Quakerism and explains what can be said (for instance how a Quaker meeting for Business operates), and looks at what cannot be said (what Quakers think happens after death) and why. He talks of the testimonies, being led by the spirit, the gathered meeting, and what being an experiential religion means. A full and inspiring, but distinctively different introduction to the Society of Friends.

Being In The Middle By Being At The Edge. Quaker Experience

Being In The Middle By Being At The Edge. Quaker Experience

BY SUE & STEVE WILLIAMS
During 1991-2 Sue and Steve Williams, experienced Quaker mediators themselves, traveled round the world to consult with other Quakers involved in non-official political mediation. Using their words and examples this book is a distillation and reflection on the mediation process. High profile negotiations and cease fires are dramatic, but often behind them are years of work by groups and individuals toiling away in obscurity. Quaker mediation is one strand in this strategy.

Being Truthful

Being Truthful

2003 Michener Lecture

BY HEATHER MOIR
"I chose [the] title Being Truthful because I am convinced that it is not just a matter of what we say but of how we live. Our lives must speak of what we are. Our religion must not be only what we say we believe, but how it directs and grounds our actions. To be believable, we must both believe and be committed to our beliefs, and they need to be grounded in truth. (Do you remember the old saw about "how can I hear what you say when what you are is thundering in my ears?")." - The author. Moir explores how to live truthfully day to day.

Berenstain Bears And The Big Question

Berenstain Bears And The Big Question

BY STAN AND JAN BERENSTAIN
A Berenstain Bears book might be the last place one would look to find a depiction of a Quaker meeting for worship, but evidently a relative of the Berenstains was a Friend and this book the result of visiting Quaker meeting more than once. Early in the book, Sister asks, "What is God?" To answer her question, Papa and Mama Bear take the family to the Chapel in the Woods and on this particular morning, the minister doesn't deliver a sermon, but invites the congregants to wait in silence and, if they feel led, to deliver a message. A number of the members of the Bear family offer messages and the book ends with Sister Bear asking, "Did God make questions?"

The Best Of All Possible Worlds

The Best Of All Possible Worlds

A Story Of Philosophers, God, And Evil

BY STEPHEN NADLER
Liebniz arrived in Paris in 1672. He befriended France's two greatest philosopher-theologians Antoine Arnauld and Nicolas de Malebranche. The interactions of these 3 men would prove of great consequence for the development of modern philosophical and religious thought. Despite their wildly different views and personalities, the philosophers shared a single, passionate concern: resolving the problem of evil. Why is it that, in a world created by an all-powerful, all-wise, and infinitely just God, there is sin and suffering? Why do bad things happen to good people, and good things to bad people? This is the story of a clash between radically divergent worldviews.

Between Barack And A Hard Place

Between Barack And A Hard Place

Racism And White Denial In The Age Of Obama

BY TIM WISE
Race is, and always has been, an explosive issue in the United States. In this timely new book, Tim Wise explores how Barack Obama's Presidency is taking the race debate to new levels. For many white people, Obama's rise signifies the end of racism as a pervasive social force; a validation of the American ideology that anyone can make it if they work hard, and that institutional barriers against people of color have all but vanished. But is this true? No! The evidence is clear: white privilege and discrimination against people of color are still operative and actively thwarting opportunities, despite the success of individuals like Obama.

The Secret Gospel Of Thomas

Salvaging Sense Of The Meeting - Php 307

BY BARRY MORLEY
"In seeking the sense of the meeting we open ourselves to being guided to perfect resolution in the Light, to a place where we sit in unity in the collective inward Presence. Through consensus we decide it; through sense of the meeting we turn it over, allowing it to be decided. `Reaching consensus is a secular process,' says a Friend. `In sense of the meeting God gets a voice.'" (the Author) Morley describes three essential components in discovering sense of the meeting: release, long focus, and transition to Light, all of which are nurtured by worship.

Voteless Decision Making In The Religious Society Of Friends

BY MICHAEL SHEERAN
Michael Sheeran, a Jesuit scholar, spent two years visiting monthly meetings and observing annual sessions within Philadelphia Yearly Meeting studying the actual decision making process used among Friends. This book is the result of his study and he includes detailed descriptions of the process at work and draws conclusions about what works well and what does not. Also included is a history of Quaker process. "Earlier Sheeran had written, `Quakers do not begin with a theory. They begin with an event.' This event, this knowing at first hand that the continuous revelation is still at work is, in his judgement, what really matters." -Douglas Steere, from the foreword
