My Name Is Sangoel

My Name Is Sangoel

BY KAREN LYNN WILLIAMS, KHADRA MOHAMMED, CATHERINE STOCK
Sangoel is a refugee. Leaving behind his homeland of Sudan, where his father died in the war, he has little to call his own other than his name. When he, his mother and sister arrive in the United States, everything seems very strange and unlike home. Sangoel quietly endures the fact that no one can pronounce his name. Lonely and homesick, he finally comes up with an ingenious solution to this problem, and in the process he at last begins to feel at home.

Mystery Of Quaker Light

Mystery Of Quaker Light

Php 385

BY PETER BIEN
Light is the central metaphor in the religious lives of Friends, but not of Friends alone. "The light that lighteth every person who cometh into the world" has served as an image of sacred mystery for ancient Hebrews and Greeks, for Dante, for modern poets, and for theorists on the physics of electromagnetism. What has Light meant to different people throughout the ages? How did various ideas about Light influence the prologue to John's Gospel? What did early Friends understand Light to mean? In this pamphlet, Peter Bien explores the theology and poetry of Friends' favorite religious symbol.

Mysticism And Activism

Mysticism And Activism

Learning From John Woolman

BY MICHAEL BIRKEL
"First we'll look at some passages from [Woolman's] writings to see how he finds the spiritual life to be a unity, an integrated life of both inward experience and outward action for social change. Next, we can turn our attention to the resources he finds for this integrated spiriutal life. Then we'll see how he takes the language he uses to describe his inward experience of worship and applies it to his outward labors for a just human society....Finally we can consider how his work might inspire us to a unified life, one in which service is an expression of worship and worship is a form of action." -The author, from his opening statements

James Robinson's updated introduction reflects ten years of additional research and editorial and critical work. An afterword by Richard Smith discusses the modern relevance of Gnosticism and its influence on such writers as Voltaire, Blake, Yeats, Kerouac, and Philip K. Dick.

Naming The Powers

Naming The Powers

The Language Of Power In The New Testament

BY WALTER WINK
For Wink `the Powers' are understood as social forces, religious, moral and political structures (the tyrant, the market, the school, the courts, race, and nation) They make themselves the hand servants of the worst of human emotions and motivations and facilitate actions leading to inequality, injustice and ecological destruction, making such actions appear `logical' and `inevitable,' causing good people to act accordingly, even as they may personally regret the results. This quartet of books names, unmasks and shows how one can engage with these powers producing a powerful new theology of nonviolence.

New Perspectives On The Canterbury Shakers

BY DAVID STARBUCK
"Because the Shakers were a religious group that believed in communal living and celibacy, and because the group was founded in the 18th century, many people have assumed that they were cloistered, rigid or austere . . . But what Starbuck has found suggests that, while they adhered to their principles, their principles may have been different than what most people have commonly believed." - Valley News. From his 25 years of excavating at Canterbury Shaker Village, Starbuck's systematic mapping and inventory program for the entire settlement provide a new, welcome, completely different, and creative interpretation of the Shakers.
