Reflections On Mercy, Activism & Doing "nothing" For Peace
BY LIN JENSEN Every day, Lin Jensen plops down a meditation cushion on the streets of Chico, CA, and sits 'peace vigils' to protest the U.S. Iraq invasion - his effort to change the world. From his knee-level spot, Jensen encounters a bracing array of what he calls 'uprights': a heartbreakingly generous homeless man; hostile passersby who scream obscenities; 'White Wolf,' who punctuates every shout with a sharp poke to Lin's chest; compassionate soldiers - all amid rain, sun, exhaust, and the scent of azaleas. Jensen shares his struggles and helps us all learn more about humility, generosity, and what it really means to love our neighbors.

A World History
BY ANTONY ADOLF This is what the title suggests - a look at how Peace has been striven for across the world and from the earliest days - once the author can say for certain Peace does have such a history. Much of the book though looks at recent ideas and techniques that have made Peace a reality and that could hopefully work in other situations. The author is at pains to show the peace is much more than the absence of war. Much information not easily found elsewhere.

Palestinians And Israelis Listening To Each Other
BY THICH NHAT HAHN Nobel Peace Prize nominee and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh demonstrates how a real peace process is based on spiritual not Political strength. He offers the idea that peace in oneself is the basis of peace in the family, society, and the world. BY TODD PARR "Todd Parr's The Peace Book is a timely explanation of the term for young readers living in a sometimes uneasy world. In the neon-hued, cartoon landscape, peace can be anything from `keeping the water blue for all the fish' to `wearing different clothes' (the picture shows two girls, one in funky bellbottoms, the other in a traditional burqa) to `having enough pizza in the world for everyone.'" - Publishers Weekly

The Paxton Boys And The Destruction Of William Penn's Holy Experiment
BY KEVIN KENNY William Penn established Pennsylvania in 1682 as a "holy experiment" in which Europeans and Indians could live together in harmony. In this book, historian Kevin Kenny explains how this Peaceable Kingdom--benevolent, Quaker, pacifist--gradually disintegrated in the eighteenth century, with disastrous consequences for Native Americans. "Kenny concludes that the Boys' attitude toward the Indians and their attacks on the ruling powers presaged the military and political activities of the American Revolution and the new nation's mistreatment of the Indians." - Publishers Weekly

Prayer, Resistance, Community
BY HENRI NOUWEN Henri Nouwen wrote this book twenty years ago as his personal response in a time of heightening Cold War tensions. Its publication now, in a new era of fear and violence, is particularly timely. On the one hand Peacework represents a passionate call to all Christians to embrace Jesus' ethic of peacemaking as an "unconditional, unlimited, and uncompromising" demand. But Nouwen goes on to show that peacemaking is more than a matter of carrying placards or opposing war. "Nobody can be a Christian without being a peacemaker. . . What we are called to is a life of peacemaking in which all that we do, say, think or dream is part of our concern to bring peace to our world." -From the book
