Chocolate Wars

Chocolate Wars

The 150-year Rivalry Between The World's Greatest Chocolate Makers

BY DEBORAH CADBURY
As chocolate companies raced to compete around the globe, Quaker capitalism met a challenge that would eventually defeat it. In 2000 Cadbury's was the world's largest confectionary company. But before long it faced a threat to its very survival, and the chocolate wars culminated in a multi-billion pound showdown pitting independence and Quaker tradition against the cut-throat tactics of a corporate leviathan. Featuring a colorful cast of savvy entrepreneurs, brilliant eccentrics and resourceful visionaries, 'Chocolate Wars' is the story of a uniquely alluring product and of the evolution, for better and worse, of modern business.

Choosing Against War

Choosing Against War

A Christian View

BY JOHN ROTH
"Roth wrote this short, simple introduction to Christian pacifism 'out of a conviction that the gospel of Jesus Christ does indeed speak to the crises of our day with a perspective that is both distinctive and unique.' Very much in the tradition of Christian apology, the book isn't likely to convert readers with Nietzschean inclinations, whom it often seems to be arguing against. But those curious about Christian pacifism and the strains of the Christian tradition, particularly the historic peace churches (Mennonites, Brethren, and Quakers), which understand that nonviolence lies at the heart of the gospel, could do worse than to start their learning here." - Booklist

Christianity, Social Tolerance, And Homosexuality

Christianity, Social Tolerance, And Homosexuality

Gay People In Western Europe From The Beginning Of The Christian Era To The Fourteenth Century

BY JOHN BOSWELL
Ten years of research in a dozen languages went into this remarkable book. It is fascinating, not just because of the often unacknowledged gay history in Christianity and the Christian West that it presents, but also for the wit and wisdom the author brings to what might be considered modern day gay issues.

Christmas In The Trenches

Christmas In The Trenches

BY JOHN MCCUTCHEON, ILLUSTRATED BY HENRI SORENSEN
It is cold and clear on Christmas Eve night in 1914. Francis Tolliver and his fellow British soldiers are holed up in muddy trenches along the Western Front. The German soldiers lie in wait across a field known as "No Man's Land." Suddenly a strange sound pierces the darkness. Someone is singing a Christmas carol in German. When the song ends, Thomas and the other British soldiers sing a carol. Soon carols are sung back and forth across No Man's Land. Then a figure emerges in the dark, carrying a small Christmas tree. Slowly the British and German soldiers leave their trenches, and the war, behind to stand together in the open field. Includes a CD with 2 songs and a reading of the book.

The Church Of The Second Chance

The Church Of The Second Chance

A Faith-based Approach To Prison Reform

BY JENS SOERING
Jens Soering, who has been in prison for more than 20 years for a murder he claims he didn't commit, shows that, despite committing theft, murder, even terrorism, figures like Moses, Samson, and Paul were raised to places of honor in what we might call the 'Church of the Second Chance.' The stories of these biblical outlaws can help solve a social crisis that has been building for over 30 years: the problem of America's prisons. Each chapter begins with a Bible study, goes on to examine a crucial problem besetting our jails and penitentiaries, and ends with an interview that demonstrates how people are working today, in and out of prison, to apply God's word to our own lives and times.

BY SCOTT WARREN
SECONDHAND, pretty good condition. School library type book, his is an investigation of three loosely identified Native American cultural groups: the Anasazi, the Hohokam, and the Mogollon. The first three brief chapters are an explanation of archaeological techniques and a description of the physical setting that was home to the cultures included. Each is then depicted in separate chapters. The book is graced with attractive color photographs, many of them full-page. Civil War Wives

The Lives And Times Of Angelina Grimke Weld, Varina Howell Davis, And Julia Dent Grant

BY CAROL BERKIN
Quaker Angelina Grimke renounced the slaveholding of her family and embraced the antislavery movement, but found her voice silenced by marriage to fellow reformer Theodore Weld. Varina Howell incurred the disapproval of her husband, Jefferson Davis, when she would not be an obedient wife. Though ill-prepared for her role as First Lady of the Confederacy, she became a political lobbyist for her husband's release from prison. Julia Dent, the wife of Ulysses S. Grant seemed content with the restrictions of marriage and motherhood. Only late in life did she glimpse the price of dependency.

Clothe Yourself In Righteousness

Clothe Yourself In Righteousness

But First Let’s Get Naked

BY MAGGIE HARRISON
Maggie was pondering the coincidence of early Friends going publicly naked and the public nudity found at some modern Liberal Friends' institutions. Is there something going on here? And so, Clothe Yourself in Righteousness was born. It felt like a Leading. Maggie sensed it was more than just a term paper. A pamphlet? An album? Workshops? It felt important. It felt like something that could change us forever. So here you have it: the love child between Maggie the novice academic and Maggie the faltering, fumbling Friend.

The Color Of Wealth

The Color Of Wealth

The Story Behind The U.s. Racial Wealth Divide

BY MEIZHU LUI, BARBARA ROBLES, BETSY LEONDAR-WRIGHT
For every dollar owned by the average white family in the United States, the average family of color has less than a dime. Why do people of color have so little wealth? Written by five leading experts on the racial wealth divide who recount the asset-building histories of Native Americans, Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and European Americans, this book is a uniquely comprehensive multicultural history of American wealth. Published in conjunction with United for a Fair Economy, The Color of Wealth suggests that until government policy tackles disparities in wealth, not just income, the United States will never have racial and economic justice.

The Rise Of Post-racial Politics And The Retreat From Racial Equity

BY TIM WISE
In this critically lauded book, Tim Wise argues against "colorblindness" and for a deeper color-consciousness in both public and private practice. We can only begin to move toward authentic social and economic equity through what Wise calls "illuminated individualism"-acknowledging the diverse identities that have shaped our perceptions, and the role that race continues to play in the maintenance of disparities between whites and people of color in the United States today. Colorblind presents a timely and provocative look at contemporary racism and offers fresh ideas on what can be done to achieve true social justice and economic equality.
