Underground Railroad & Civil Rights Freedom Songs, Volume 2

BY KIM AND REGGIE HARRIS

Brief Description:
Black gospel spirituals often served to assert both a hope for a better life and to convey coded directions to runaway slaves heading north on the Underground Railroad. Many of these same songs became anthems of the Civil Rights movement of the 60s, their messages of faith and determination stoking freedom marches and rallies. Artists include Bernice Johnson Reagon, renowned musician, teacher, activist and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock; actor Danny Glover; contemporary folk-blues performer Guy Davis and many others.
