Jayber Crow

The Life Story Of Jayber Crow, Barber Of The Port William Membership

BY WENDELL BERRY

Brief Description:
Jayber Crow is another story of the community of Port William and the lives of its citizens. Jayber is an orphan, returned to the town. his status as barber and bachelor place him simultaneously at its center and on its margins. A born observer, he hears much, watches carefully, and spends 50 years learning its citizens by heart. As the 20th century moves inexorably forward, swallowing rural towns, Port William turns in upon itself. Integrity is key to the stories and lives of its inhabitants and to Jayber's love of Mattie Keith.

Chris Wynn:

This is a novel in a series of books by Kentucky writer and farmer Wendell Berry. It is not a "Quaker" book, however it tells the story of a man who lives simply both outwardly and inwardly. Jayber Crow is essentially a "de facto" Friend. Berry's writing style is very moving to me.
