To Go Where There Is No Light

To Go Where There Is No Light

John Calvi's 2011 Gathering Plenary

BY JOHN CALVI
This is an mp3 audio file of John Calvi's stirring plenary talk "To Go Where There is No Light", delivered at the 2011 FGC Gathering. John sees ending American torture as the next great spiritual work of Friends: to carry the Light where there is no Light is our greatest Quaker heritage. John is a massage therapist and Quaker healer with a gift for releasing pain. He began healing work with torture survivors in 1982. Later, the Abu Ghraib photos spoke to his heart and he founded the Quaker Initiative to End Torture. To hear an extended sample of his talk, go to www.soundcloud.com/fgcquaker.

Reflections On Iowa Yearly Meeting Of Friends ( Conservative)

BY CALLIE MARSH
The Conservative Friends of Iowa have a unique story. It is a chronicle of how one group of Quakers has held fast to its roots against the winds of change, while simultaneously grappling with and responding to the modern world. Iowa Yearly Meeting (Conservative) stands its own ground, fitting neither into the liberal nor orthodox Quaker camps, yet with connections to both. Callie Marsh entered this community as an adult seeker and made it her home, taking part in identity-wrenching struggles, such as their understanding of Christianity and the question of same-gender marriage. A Spiritual Survival Guide For Gay And Lesbian Christians

BY CANDACE CHELLEW-HODGE
UCC minister Candace Chellew-Hodge offers gay Christians a guide to becoming strong in faith and love in the midst of hatred by saying "no" to external and internal messages of worthlessness. She shows that being a gay person and a faithful person is not a contradiction, and that bigoted "Christians" cannot be represented in the press as "the other side of the issue." Quaker pastor Phil Gulley even gets mentioned, as Chellew-Hodge relates to his message that those who reacted hatefully to his message of encompassing salvation (in the controversial book If Grace is True) had "rage coming from their stuff" and own problems.

Dear Friend

Letters And Essays Of Elias Hicks

BY ELIAS HICKS EDITED BY PAUL BUCKLEY
Elias Hicks penned hundreds of letters. They complement his Journal, fleshing out details of his life and beliefs - revealing a man devoted to his family, neighbors and friends, to the RSOF, but more than anything else, a man simply, humbly, and steadfastly devoted to God. Some of his letters recount the trials of a traveling minister in the early 19th century. Most controversially, some put forward his theological beliefs and the scriptural basis for them. Paul Buckley has compiled and transcribed a selection of Elias Hicks' letters and essays from the original manuscripts. Footnotes & appendices explain archaic and unfamiliar words and phrases, and biographical sketches.

Freedom Glorious Freedom

Freedom Glorious Freedom

The Spiritual Journey To The Fullness Of Life For Gays, Lesbians, And Everybody Else

BY JOHN MCNEILL
McNeill reveals the freedom that lesbian and gay Christians can find by connecting with the spirit of God that dwells within. Through explorations of 12-step programs, coming out, gay marriage, gays in the military and his own life journey, McNeill shows how lesbians and gay men can achieve full spiritual maturity and self-acceptance, thereby becoming able to share their gifts with a needy world. John J. McNeill has done a great deal of work on the subject of spirituality and gay and lesbian issues as both an author and a lecturer. He is the author of "The Church and the Homosexual"; "Taking a Chance on God: Liberating Theology for Gays and Lesbians, Their Lovers, Friends, and Families"

Conversation With Christ

Conversation With Christ

Quaker Meditations On The Gospel Of John

BY DOUGLAS GWYN
The Gospel of John is sometimes known among Friends as "the Quaker Gospel," because it speaks to the Quaker concern for a here-and-now experience of eternal reality in Christ. Conversation with Christ expores this theme through thirteen conversations from the Fourth Gospel in which the history and mystery of Jesus are revealed. Each of these close readings is followed by examples of ways Quakers have grappled with its message and by a guided meditation inviting readers to experience the form Christ takes in our lives. How On Earth Do We Live Now?

How On Earth Do We Live Now?

Natural Capital, Deep Ecology, And The Commons

BY DAVID CISCEL, BARBARA DAY, KEITH HELMUTH, SANDRA LEWIS, AND JUDY LUMB
A radical re-assessment is underway on what it will take to prevent our industrial-commercial civilization from sliding sideways into the ditch of ecological breakdown and economic collapse. Many folks are now trying to engage this crisis from a footing of ecological integrity and social solidarity. Yet, the web of life is disrespected, degraded, and disrupted on every hand by destructive economic activity. More and more the critical factors of ecological integrity and social equity are compromised and unhinged by an economy that is both dysfunctional and out of control. As economist, David Ciscel, put it in a recent issue of Quaker Eco-Bulletin, "It's the economy, Friends."

The Evolution Of Faith

The Evolution Of Faith

How God Is Creating A Better Christianity

BY PHILIP GULLEY
That troublesome Quaker pastor from Indiana has been busy writing again. Rebelling against the narrowness of mind and spirit in some of American Christendom. He asks what if there was another way? What if God wanted us to grow and change, both in our theology and our beliefs? He invites us to put aside obedience to antiquated claims and worldviews, and discover what we really believe. Instead of looking for answers outside ourselves, Gulley encourages us to look within & develop our own apologetics, a belief system open to change. In this paradigm, faith should always be seen as a work in progress.

Searching For Interfaith Understanding In America

BY GUSTAV NIEBUHR
In this book Niebuhr explores the cultural and historical forces that have led to the state of religion today. Niebuhr is most interested in the "quiet countertrend ... directly challeng[ing] violence in God's name, even if it does not replace it. At its heart ... a grassroots educational process in which the goal is to gain knowledge about individual and their belief in a way that lessens fear." Niebuhr discusses Quakers and their difficult early history in colonial America briefly at the beginning of his chapter on the religious imperative of hospitality.

Collective Visioning

How Groups Can Work Together For A Just And Sustainable Future

BY LINDA STOUT
Stout lays out the extensive and innovative prework that must be done to build trust and openness before any kind of meeting is held - a distinctive feature of collective visioning. She describes creative approaches for encouraging people to share their histories and most deeply held personal values, and she explains how understanding why each person is drawn to the work is vital in designing action strategies that build on people's particular strengths. She illustrates her points with inspiring stories of what collective vision can accomplish, drawn from her decades of committed activism.
