Christian Peacemaker Teams Held Hostage In Iraq
EDITED BY TRICIA GATES BROWN On November 26, 2005, Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) members Tom Fox and Jim Loney along with delegation members Norman Kember and Harmeet Sooden were kidnapped in Iraq. Tom Fox was killed on March 9, 2006. Jim, Norman and Harmeet were freed two weeks later on March 23 after 118 days of captivity. The kidnapping of these four peacemakers was like a rock thrown into a pond. This collection describes the ripples on the water, the impact and results of that rock, in stories characterized by hope, courage, friendship, and forgiveness. Also included is a chapter entitled, "Tom Fox: a Profile of an Ordinary Man's Calling to an Extraordinary Life" by Selby McCash and Johannes Williams.

The Beatitudes And Just War Theory
BY THOMAS TRZYNA Thomas Trzyna takes a fresh look at pacifism as a way of life and a practical method of conflict resolution that is grounded in the Scripture, particularly the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew's gospel. Based on a study of just war theory and contemporary world events, this book does not rehearse familiar debates about how to justify war. Rather, it approaches the topic from the provocative angle that the work of peacemakers requires setting goals to be measured in generations, not years.

Education For An Interdependent World
BY ELISE BOULDING "How will we find ways to occupy the common space and share the common resources and the common opportunities in this company of strangers which is the human race, without obliterating the differences or doing violence to deeply held values? Can we stay rooted in our own communities, retain the best of our national ways, and still develop strategies for meeting human needs everywhere, in a linked system of mutual aid that respects the integrity of other ways of life?"From the Introduction.

Foreword by Jay Marshall of Earlham College.

BY GLENN PAIGE Probably the first book to have the word "nonkilling" in its title. It invites all who study political science throughout the world and other concerned readers to consider seriously the question, "Is a nonkilling society possible?" The book proceeds to offer grounds for taking such a possibility seriously, and explores the implications of such an assumption for political science, for global problem-solving, and for needed new transitional institutions. The author was in the Korean war, were he did kill, and these ideas come from his repentance for that.

Tools For Ending Torture
COMPILED AND EDITED BY CHUCK FAGER This new study booklet from Quaker House is for those working to end torture and hold torturers accountable or seeking encouragement in the effort. It was produced because, despite an initial flurry of reform, the new administration in Washington has left in place many of the interrogation policies and programs of its predecessors. It has also turned aside efforts to hold accountable those who planned and carried out illegal torture policies and programs.

An Anthology Of Prison Memoirs By Conscientious Objectors From The Great War To The Cold War
EDITED BY PETER BROCK This important and thought-provoking anthology consists of thirty prison memoirs by conscientious objectors to military service, centering on their jail experiences either during the first or second world wars or in Cold War America. Voices from history come alive, detailing the impact of prison life and offering unique perspectives on wartime government policies of conscription and imprisonment. Sometimes intensely moving, and often inspiring, these memoirs show that in some cases, individual conscientious objectors sought to reform the penal system from within either by publicizing its dysfunction or through further resistance to authority.

BY CHERYL KIRK-DUGGAN Many people of faith tend to say that they espouse peace and believe the essence of Micah 6:8, which states that we ought to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Violence and Theology introduces the pervasive, stark reality of violence that weaves through general and religious culture in the West: including Scripture, classic literature, and nursery stories; history and politics; music, sports, television and video games; and even theology itself. From this persistently honest analysis, Kirk-Duggan then leads us to explore themes of justice, conflict resolution, holistic and cultural health, and spiritual and theological wellness, as ways to overcome violence today.

Discipleship Queries For First World Christians
BY CHED MYERS Myers exposes the social and spiritual "stones" that impede us in our development and growth as Christians. "In every age," writes Myers, "disciples despair that the story has ended, only to discover that again the stone 'has been rolled away,' reopening the possibility - and imperative - of following the Way of Jesus." He uses three of the most troubling and problematic of recent events - the Los Angeles riots, the Gulf War, the Columbus quincentennial - to demonstrate how the subtle complexities of a culture of technological wizardy, information overload, and short-term memory can be recognized as blocking the first step on the journey of discipleship.
