Early in the book, Sister asks, "What is God?" To answer her question, Papa and Mama Bear take the family to the Chapel in the Woods and on this particular morning, the minister doesn't deliver a sermon, but invites the congregants to wait in silence and, if they feel led, to deliver a message. A number of the members of the Bear family offer messages and the book ends with Sister Bear asking, "Did God make questions?"

Stories From The Old And New Testaments
BY GARY SCHMIDT, ILLUSTRATED BY DENNIS NOLAN "In a smooth, poetic style, Schmidt retells twenty-five Bible stories, emphasizing the humanity of the characters. For example, he fills out Noah's story with a description of the despair Noah and his family feel, trapped on the Ark not knowing if they will ever see land again. The elaborations retain the tone of the original stories but extend them to explore motivations and emotions. Nolan's handsome paintings are suitably majestic or gentle." - Horn Book

BY DOUGLAS WOOD, ILLUSTRATED BY PATRICK JAMES LYNCH "Wood tackles the enormity of death and the meaning of prayer in a way that is both accessible and meaningful. A boy walks with his grandfather, who is his best friend. As they stroll through woods and past streams, the boy asks those questions that grandparents are on earth to answer 'Why' 'What if?' and about prayers. Lucidly, the grandfather explains that trees 'pray' as they reach for the sky, that waters pray, that the wind prays and sings at the same time." - Kirkus Reviews

BY LINDA ZUCKERMAN, ILLUSTRATED BY JON J. MUTH Here is the rare book that not only expresses a parent's love for their child, but offers a hope for what that love will become. It begins with a wish at bedtime, as parents hold their children tight and hope their love will cradle them, safe and sound. It continues through the day their children have grown up, proud and strong, and can pass that love on to someone else. This is a book that goes beyond a parent's "I love you" to the generous wish that our children will make the world a better place.

BY GWENYTH SWAIN, ILLUSTRATED BY RONALD HIMLER "A moving story of hope and love, woven around a Christmas hymn. In an author's note, Swain explains how, in 1933, a girl named Annie Morgan sang the title song to John Jacob Niles, a collector of folksongs, at a revival in Murphy, NC. The fictionalized tale that follows describes how Annie mourns for her mother: `I still can't figure how she could have died in spring, when there's so much life just bursting from the ground and the tree branches.' She and her itinerant preacher father wander the country, speaking to any folks who will listen to them. Annie composes a song to express her religious questions, which she sings to a crowd. . This book is a treasure."-School Library Journal

David is so poor he can barely feed his family. Jacob is so consumed with staying rich he thinks about nothing but money. But the two men have one thing in common: they both believe that miracles are big, magical things that can only happen somewhere else, to someone else. But when Jacob wakes up from a nap in synagogue one day, sure that God has demanded twelve loaves of bread from him, all this changes in amazing ways you'd never expect. A delightful, timeless legend based on Jewish tradition, In God's Hands tells of the ordinary miracles that occur when we are faithful.
