QUAKER PRESS

“We have no time but this present time to bear witness to the power of the Light to re-create the human heart, and thus transform our doing, our seeing, and our speaking. There is much tenderness and good will among us, but have we been baptized with fire, as well as the Holy Spirit?”

— Brian Drayton, from On Living with a Concern for Gospel Ministry, 2006

Quaker Press of FGC publishes resources that nurture meetings and individual Friends. We are committed to an historical ministry as “publishers of Truth” in the experience of Friends. We work closely with other FGC programs to produce books and other resources that help to foster individual and corporate spiritual growth and public witness. Quaker history, biography, early Quaker writings, devotionals, reflective essays, fiction and memoir speak to Friends’ living ministry. Quaker Press supports leadership and community-building through resources on Quaker faith and practice, worship, clerking, and outreach. Curricula for adults and youth offer opportunities for group study of the Quaker faith and testimonies—including the life and message of Jesus as found in the Bible and guidance on how to incorporate our faith in our daily lives.

Talk Given At The Fgc Gathering June 1958 In Cape May, New Jersey

BY MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
Those who heard Martin Luther King Jr. speak on "Nonviolence and Racial Justice" at Cape May in 1958 gave him a standing ovation at the end of his remarks. His words, though given at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, call to us today: "Now I cannot say that violence never wins any victories; it occasionally wins victories. Nations often receive their independence through the use of violence. But I can say this, that that is all it does. Violence only achieves temporary victory; but it never can achieve ultimate peace. It creates many more social problems than it solves. And violence ends up defeating itself."

On Living With A Concern For Gospel Ministry

On Living With A Concern For Gospel Ministry

BY BRIAN DRAYTON
"Brian Drayton has studied A Description of the Qualifications Necessary to a Gospel Minister by Samuel Bownas, and many Friends journals, internalizing their teaching and applying it to his own life and ministry. He is called to minister to ministers, to encourage, help, and yes, even admonish Friends who feel a gift for ministry arising within. Here is a book full of wisdom and advice on how to cherish, live with, and grow into the gift of ministry. It is well aimed at the specific temptations and opportunities of our own day, while incorporating those timeless truths with which a minister of any era must grapple." - Marty Grundy

BY TOM GATES
By popular demand the Bible talks given at the 2005 Annual Gathering of Friends now appear in printed form, a booklet containing the text, footnotes and the readings handed to participants. "Tom Gates' presentations, delivered at the FGC Gathering 2005, are truly inspired illuminations of the thought and witness of George Fox. For those of us who were present, Tom `opened' George Fox to us in very much the same way that those who were contemporaries of George Fox said that he, George Fox, opened the scriptures to them." - Art Larrabee

Sarah Mapps Douglass, Faithful Attender Of Quaker Meeting

View From The Back Bench

BY MARGARET HOPE BACON, FOREWORD BY VANESSA JULYE
Understanding the past is often key to changing the present. After 165 years the legacy of Sarah Mapps Douglass, African American scholar, educator, abolitionist, artist and faithful attender of Quaker meeting has much to say to Friends in the 21st century, especially those concerned with racism and the lack of racial diversity within the Religious Society of Friends. In the foreword Vanessa Julye places the lessons from Sarah Mapps Douglass' life in a vivid and painful contemporary context. In the biography that follows Margaret Hope Bacon explores Sarah's life.

The Seed Cracked Open

The Seed Cracked Open

Growing Beyond Racism

BY VANESSA JULYE
In this keynote address for the July 2005 New York Yearly Meeting annual sessions, Vanessa Julye addresses the reality of racism within the Religious Society of Friends. Stories from generations of her family, and the experiences of other Black Friends across time, make vivid the sense of isolation and barriers people of color face in the white, middle-class Friends culture. Vanessa Julye goes beyond critique, however, to present significant questions and additional resources as a ministry to heal and to empower Friends to "move further along the spectrum of racism."
