Alive In The Spirit
BY MARCELLE MARTIN In this Michener Lecture, Marcelle Martin shares her experiences that transformed her understanding of who we are, how we are united with the divine Mystery, and what we are called to be and do. She tells stories of the hearfelt search of early Friends who found what they had been seeking, then became powerful witnesses to the divine Presence and Power they came to know. This talk considers how, in their time, early Quakers presented a more radical alternative understanding of Christ and life in the Spirit than that espoused by other Christians and chose language that was fresh and evocative, and a way of living that provided visible testimony.

COMPILED BY MARY SNYDER This has been previously published as "Fundamentals of the RSOF", "Bringing religious education home" & "What! A Quaker catechism". The intention of this packet is to orient the newcomer to the foundations of Quakerism. There is a collection of Biblical quotes important to early Friends and quotes from prominent Quakers. They focus on such topics as Universalism, Experience of the Divine, Unprogrammed Worship, the Testimonies, Leadings, and Prayer. Read through these quotations slowly as a family or in a group and reflect worshipfully on the content. An excellent resource for introducing new attenders and re-acquainting seasoned Friends.

Quaker Spirituality In Historical And Philosophical Context
BY LESLIE STEVENSON This book is about "the meaning of life" or "the spiritual quest". It offers a selective and critical evaluation of some central strands of Western religious and philosophical thought over two and a half thousand years. It starts with Socrates' philosophy of life, and the Greek tradition of philosophy that he initiated. It gives its own "take" on the teaching of Jesus, and on the long and controversial history of Christianity. There is a chapter devoted to George Fox and the beginning of the Quaker movement. It recommends a non-literal interpretation of language about God, with some reference to Austin Farrer on "poetic truth". Sadly a tad expensive!
