Lessons From Latino Youth

BY EILEEN MCNERNEY
In 1993, a 16 year-old was shot and killed behind Sister Eileen McNerney's residence. Sr. McNerney gathered support and began St. Joseph's Workshop in 1995, a successful, non-profit continuing education project for mostly Latino young men and women in crisis. The stakes were high and the future often seemed grim as she let them teach her about life, theirs and hers. Who ministered to whom? Was it the youth, surrounded by love, who were transformed or their love that transformed her?

As a nature and science writer, Holmes has wallowed in any number of ecosystems. None of these explorations has been more surprising, nor more downright addictive, than the world she discovered outside her back door. A Play

BY ELIZABETH KUTI
"The Sugar Wife, a play by British playwright Elizabeth Kuti, features an Irish Quaker couple struggling with issues involving slavery, the morality of wealth and marriage in 1850s Dublin. The award winning play has been performed in London and Dublin. `The childless Hannah Tewkley devotes herself to work with the poor of the city while her husband Samuel tends to a thriving business dealing in tea, coffee, and sugar. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Mission To Save America: 1955-1968

BY STEWART BURNS
In a striking departure from earlier books, Burns focuses on King's biblical faith and spiritual vision as fundamental to his political leadership. King is not portrayed as a lone exalted hero, but as the heart of a fabric of principled leadership that stretched from his closest colleagues to the movement's foot soldiers on the streets. This book stresses his shaping by other leaders - heroic figures such as Bayard Rustin, Ella Baker, James Bevel, Bob Moses, and Marian Wright Edelman - and his conflicted relationships with John and Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

We Felt Their Kindliness

We Felt Their Kindliness

An American Family’s Afghan Odyssey (1949-1951)

EDITED BY OS CRESSON
Rebecca & Osborne Cresson lived in Afghanistan for 2 years with their daughter, Wetherill (8) and son, Os (7). Osborne taught math in high school and Rebecca taught elementary school. They believed that a practical way to build world peace is for families to go and live among people whose ways differ from their own. While teaching and homemaking, visiting and traveling, Osborne recorded the scene with a camera and Rebecca with pen and paper. This is a glimpse of the Afghan people, only a few years after their country started to admit foreigners. Although the materials are over 50 years old, the culture described is still present in Afghanistan today.

What Is Gnosticism?

What Is Gnosticism?

BY KAREN KING
King shows how historians have been misled by ancient Christian polemicists who attacked Gnostic beliefs as a "dark double" against which the new faith could define itself. Having identified past distortions, she is able to offer a new and clarifying definition of Gnosticism. Her book is thus both a thorough and innovative introduction to the twentieth-century study of Gnosticism and a revealing exploration of the concept of heresy as a tool in forming religious identity.
