Walking On Water

Walking On Water

Reading, Writing, And Revolution

BY DERRICK JENSEN
In a new paperback edition, Walking on Water is a startling and provocative look at teaching, writing, creativity, and life by a writer increasingly recognized for his passionate and articulate critique of modern civilization. Derrick Jensen brings us into his classroom?whether college or maximum security prison?where he teaches writing. He reveals how schools perpetuate the great illusion that happiness lies outside of ourselves and that learning to please and submit to those in power makes us into lifelong clock-watchers. As a writing teacher Jensen guides his students out of the confines of traditional education to find their own voices, freedom, and creativity.

We Felt Their Kindliness

We Felt Their Kindliness

An American Family’s Afghan Odyssey (1949-1951)

EDITED BY OS CRESSON
Rebecca & Osborne Cresson lived in Afghanistan for 2 years with their daughter, Wetherill (8) and son, Os (7). Osborne taught math in high school and Rebecca taught elementary school. They believed that a practical way to build world peace is for families to go and live among people whose ways differ from their own. While teaching and homemaking, visiting and traveling, Osborne recorded the scene with a camera and Rebecca with pen and paper. This is a glimpse of the Afghan people, only a few years after their country started to admit foreigners. Although the materials are over 50 years old, the culture described is still present in Afghanistan today.

Why Civil Resistance Works

Why Civil Resistance Works

The Strategic Logic Of Nonviolent Conflict

BY ERICA CHENOWETH
For more than a century, from 1900 to 2006, campaigns of nonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective as their violent counterparts in achieving their stated goals. By attracting impressive support from citizens, whose activism takes the form of protests, boycotts, civil disobedience, and other forms of nonviolent noncooperation, these efforts help separate regimes from their main sources of power and produce remarkable results, even in Iran, Burma, the Philippines, and the Palestinian Territories.

The World As It Is

Dispatches On The Myth Of Human Progress

BY CHRIS HEDGES
Drawing on two decades of experience as a war correspondent and based on his numerous columns for Truthdig, Chris Hedges presents The World As It Is, a panorama of America at home and abroad, from the coarsening effect of America's War on Terror to the front lines in the Middle East and South Asia and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Underlying his reportage is a constant struggle with the nature of war and its impact on human civilization. "War is always about betrayal," Hedges notes. "It is about betrayal of the young by the old, of cynics by idealists, and of soldiers and Marines by politicians."

Democracy's Local Heroes

BY JOHN SICELOFF AND JASON MALONEY
Twelve profiles of civic activism on both a national and local level. Each is the result of a story on Now, the popular PBS show, Stories like Bill Graham, mayor of tiny Scottsburg, Indiana, who took on the telecom giants and wired his town for free wifi; or Katie Redford, a young law student who used the Alien Tort Claims Act of 1789 and changed the way American corporations behave overseas.
