Laird Holby's PicksName: Laird Holby Affiliation: PhYM, Medford Monthly Meeting, Quaker Books picker/packer Focus: Being a Friend Today Looking for language to illuminate the "inner light" and for the encouragement to live it. Godless for God's Sake I find it important to hear Friends write honestly about their spiritual life without reference to a force greater than or beyond what is expressed by the physical universe. Integrity demands of me a greater specificity when speaking of the spirit than a sole reference to an outer deity somehow captured within ones breast. These Friends do capture the flavor of my own search in incorporating the continued revelations of a world deconstructed by our understanding of evolution, psychology, and class, to locate the spiritual life within relationship, and emerging out of listening and a dialectical dialogue -- all without an antipathy to science. The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community The very ground of our being, I mean the Earth, is calling us to either cooperate or perish. Here is one who follows in the footsteps of Woolman in encouraging us to live up to our vaunted testimonies, and in reclaiming them, to become engaged in the necessary transformation of our world. I need this encouragement. Dao de Jing: A Philosophical Translation There are many Dao (Tao) translations but the introduction to this one by Ames and Hall is an extraordinary exposition of a 2,500 year old modern outlook which makes the Dao (before it was turned into a syncretic religion) read like the earliest Faith & Practice. Therein is this query: how can I live free of Possession yet possessed by serenity, and an openness to that which is not me - and then act on it? I have a long way to go. |
