The Wooden Camera (dvd)
DIRECTED BY NTSHAVHENI WA LURULI
Brief Description:
An award-winner in several European film festivals, this English-language film by Ntshavheni Wa Luruli is a parable of choices faced by children in post-Apartheid South Africa. Best friends Madiba and Sipho, young black teenagers from a township, find a dead man whose bag holds a gun and a video camera. Madiba takes the camera, Sipho the gun, sealing their respective fates. In Cape Town, Sipho becomes a small-time gang leader, while Madiba records the city with wonder, disguising the camera as a toy to avoid difficult questions. He befriends a white girl who is eager to shuck off the conservative prejudices of her father.
