Overview

In wartime 1942 the U.S. government imposed mass removal of Japanese Americans from the west coast of the country. Gordon Hirabayashi, then a student, defied the restrictions. Gordon was convicted and imprisoned. in 1943 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld that conviction, but in 1987, in an unusual move, the court vacated the conviction on appeal. This memoir tells the story from Gordon's own perspective in a compelling, intimate narrative about what motivated him, how he endured, and how the experience deepened his ideals over time. Compiled from the correspondence, writings, and photographs of the late Gordon Hirabayashi and his family.
